The code for a mark is based on shape of elements, location of each element from top to bottom, and content of distinctive elements.
A = an arc
L = a line, preceded by a 2 or 3 as appropriate
O = an oval or circle
S = a shield or scroll
plus additional letters to distinguish variants
Thus the usual Aldrich mark is A2L, and the common Bliss Mfg Co marks are 2LRI and 2LUS.
