Maker, Mark, Model, Condition, Price

These are all the clamps noticed at Spring 2001 Brimfield, on Saturday. Twenty five dealers offered a total of 32 clamps. But not all are included in the analysis.

The items are arranged in sequence by maker code. If a single dealer had duplicate items, then the count is in parentheses. Within makers, the items are arranged in sequence by models, fist 8xx, then Inchers, then Numbers. (There aren't enough items to have to sort by condition.)

Prices were analysed only for Poor, Fair, or Good, clamps. Two clamps had no price, and no dealer could be found; this eliminated two items. If a dealer had multiple identical items, at identical prices, then the analysis uses just one. (Otherwise, the opinion of big and small dealers would not be equal.) This reduced eleven items to four. There are therefore 23 distinct data points.

• P, F, G indicate Poor, Fair, or Good conditions. (There are no Very Good items this time.)
• (I) indicates incomplete, missing one or more parts.
• (D) indicates damaged, such as handles cut off, spindles shortened, jaws altered, etc.
• (M) indicates married items, usually spindles that do not match jaws. If the clamp is married, then the jaws are used to identify the data.

The range of sizes was from 4 to 20 inches, with 10 inch being most common. Condition ranged from Poor to Good, mostly good. The usual makers were found, in the usual proportions: lots of Bliss Manufacturing, followed by Aldrich, and some others. (Oddly enough, there were no Bliss and Company.)

The unexpected was to find, not one, but two Rufus Bliss items. (This brings to 3 the total number of Rufus Bliss items.)

This season, I noticed that a number of dealers (about 1 in 5) did not wait for me to open negotiations on price; instead, they made a second, reduced, offer immediately after I picked up an item. Sometimes, these were price breaks for a pair; sometimes, just an unsolicited "I can do better on that." These have been noted. Some continued to make unsolicited third, and even fourth, offers. These have not been noted.
